Otto Sport Australia CDI farewells Joy Charlton

Australian dressage has farewelled a stalwart of the sport at the second day of the 2018 OTTO SPORT AUSTRALIA Sydney CDI.

Described as “one of the most significant riders, judges, administrators and coaches Equestrian Australia has ever known”, Joy Charlton officially marked her retirement from judging during a special presentation at the end of the day.

Ms Charlton was given a special memento and her long list of achievements in the sport were read out to the assembled crowd during the presentation.

“It's just an honour to be able to be here tonight to see how this event has grown from when I started our first FEI weekend at Lochinvar,” she said.

“I just feel so proud that we started it all off, because they told me I was crazy, that we'd never get the FEI horses. But we got 21 after three years and it was just amazing.

“It's been an amazing career and I am going to really miss it.”

It was also a day for the stars of the future to shine, as NSW rider Mary Warren clinched the Mulawa Performance FEI 16 – 25 Intermediate II CDI U25 on Mindarah Park Raphael in what was the first test for the afternoon class in Sydney International Equestrian Centre's (SIEC) revamped indoor arena.

The son of Warren's successful stallion Mindarah Park Ramadan, Mindarah Park Raphael has been at Grand Prix level for 12 months now and put in a solid performance to score 66.500% and be ranked in first place by all five judges.

“He felt fabulous in the warm-up,” Warren said. “He still gets a little bit shy, so he wasn't as flamboyant as I had hoped but he still did very well.

“It was a solid test, I think.”

The combination have enjoyed success at the Sydney CDI in the past, with a clean sweep in the CDI-Y in 2016.

“[That] was his last CDI-Y comp then I took him up to Grand Prix,” she said. “He is just starting to finally get it all together now in the actual test.”

Jasmine Haynes of Victoria took out first place in both the Quick Knot Australia FEI Junior Team Competition on Umbro with 66.970%, and the A.S.P.R. FEI Pony Team Competition CDI-P with Steendieks Champ of Glory with 68.667%.

In other results from the day, less than one per cent separated the first four placings in the OTTO SPORT AUSTRALIA Grand Prix CDI3*, won by Brett Parbery on DP Weltmieser with a score of 68.804%.

Judy Dierks was in second place on Diamond Star with 68.130%, while Matthew Dowsley (Don Desandro) was third on 68.087% and Deon Stokes (Royal Oak II) fourth with 68.065%.
